Facing it and gazing at the shadow with the help of his video camera, memories and flashbacks cut rhythmically into the travellers records of the present untill a remix of his past and future occurs. All this in an in-between space, in a non-place, ‘In Transit’.&nbsp; In the collective documentary programme ‘A Sense of Place’, six Iranian filmmakers Afsaneh Salari, Shirin Barghnavard, Mina Keshavarz, Mohammad Reza Farzad, Azin Feizabadi and Pooya Abbasian take a contemporary look at both life from the inside and existence on the run from Iran. Through seven acts, the voiceover guides the viewer on a journey mirroring the birds’ quest through seven valleys in search of the mythical Simurgh, culminating in the Valley of Death. The script: an unnamed visual/textual three-act drama concerning an undefined revolutionary situation. Within the working process there is directing, reading, rehearsal and embodiment, through which the actors interpret their real and scripted characters. The borders between fictional and factual histories, individual and collective desires, projections and biographical backgrounds become increasingly blurry. Only commented from afar by an authoritarian narrator, the actors discuss, improvise and negotiate between language and the need for action. (loop) In his four-channel film installation Uchronia, Azin Feizabadi simultaneously relates three updates of a tragic love saga from the Middle East: The legend of Layla and Majnun, put into writing for the first time in the 7th century, lives on in numerous literary, artistic and musical variations stemming from various epochs up to the present day. Layla and Majnun are lovers, but society does not allow them to be together. This refusal makes Majnun (“Madman”) lose his mind. Feizabadi’s work starts with a prologue in the lower foyer. We learn that in its three cinematic adaptations shown in the hall, Layla and Majnun were dark matter hoping to be able to live their love on Planet Earth, more precisely, in present-day Berlin. But their human embodiment is, of course, accompanied by concrete bodies marked by social history and stories. Feizabadi integrated the life stories of his three Majnun actors, none of whom are professionals, into the traditional legend. The adaptations of the saga thus make it possible to articulate in fiction the life stories of these three persons who are shaped by different migration experiences in the broadest sense: the story of 9-year-old Bashir growing up as a member of the third generation of immigrants in his Arab family in Berlin-Neukölln, of 70-year-old Michael, who as a former PR manager suffering from manic depression had lived in West-Berlin, and of the middle-age trans person Vince. In Feizabadi’s films, the Laylas and Majnuns experience time as a painful intermediate space in which past, present and future brutally clash instead of uniting in a healing manner. After thirty iterations, the slide carousal rattles back to the beginning and starts again. But the announcement “NOW” introduced by a loud click, “NOW” click, “NOW” click, can only project an illusion, for nothing is written in stone. The now comes and goes. As soon as we’ve read the lettering it again disappears from the rock, which is presented here like a geological find in a museum of natural history. “Rocks are not nouns but verbs,” writes Marcia Bjornerud, “visible evidence of processes: a volcanic eruption, the accretion of a coral reef, the growth of a mountain belt.” Geological time also takes its course, but not one that braces itself for the future in the haste of the present to get rid of the past and in doing so fails to recognize the process of eternal becoming.
