(loop) In his four-channel film installation Uchronia, Azin Feizabadi simultaneously relates three updates of a tragic love saga from the Middle East: The legend of Layla and Majnun, put into writing for the first time in the 7th century, lives on in numerous literary, artistic and musical variations stemming from various epochs up to the present day. Layla and Majnun are lovers, but society does not allow them to be together. This refusal makes Majnun (“Madman”) lose his mind. Feizabadi’s work starts with a prologue in the lower foyer. We learn that in its three cinematic adaptations shown in the hall, Layla and Majnun were dark matter hoping to be able to live their love on Planet Earth, more precisely, in present-day Berlin. But their human embodiment is, of course, accompanied by concrete bodies marked by social history and stories. Feizabadi integrated the life stories of his three Majnun actors, none of whom are professionals, into the traditional legend. The adaptations of the saga thus make it possible to articulate in fiction the life stories of these three persons who are shaped by different migration experiences in the broadest sense: the story of 9-year-old Bashir growing up as a member of the third generation of immigrants in his Arab family in Berlin-Neukölln, of 70-year-old Michael, who as a former PR manager suffering from manic depression had lived in West-Berlin, and of the middle-age trans person Vince. In Feizabadi’s films, the Laylas and Majnuns experience time as a painful intermediate space in which past, present and future brutally clash instead of uniting in a healing manner. After thirty iterations, the slide carousal rattles back to the beginning and starts again. But the announcement “NOW” introduced by a loud click, “NOW” click, “NOW” click, can only project an illusion, for nothing is written in stone. The now comes and goes. As soon as we’ve read the lettering it again disappears from the rock, which is presented here like a geological find in a museum of natural history. “Rocks are not nouns but verbs,” writes Marcia Bjornerud, “visible evidence of processes: a volcanic eruption, the accretion of a coral reef, the growth of a mountain belt.” Geological time also takes its course, but not one that braces itself for the future in the haste of the present to get rid of the past and in doing so fails to recognize the process of eternal becoming. (loop) In Uchronia, each screen extends a shape-shifting tale of the ancient Persian love story, “Layla and Majnun”, where presences made of dark matter come from the furthest parts of the universe to planet 52°N,13°E: Berlin, Germany, with the aim to realize their amorous union – an aim that would cause a cosmic catastrophe on their home planet. Earth enables them to incarnate into human bodies and become matter, offering the promise of finally realizing their love. But, the bodies they have chosen are freighted with their own physical and social baggage, entangling them in a series of earthly complications they struggle to understand and make efforts to move through. Each series of characters serves as a non-static vessel of the ancient tale underpinned by the yearning for corporeal proximity, societal sense-making, and love. A trans boy, older lovers, and children are the constellation of protagonists, respectively making the trio of chapters; each with alternate resolutions to the story, as well as their own matrixes of truth. "We carry the past together” is a mantra of the film that echoes throughout. Such is the Code of Hammurabi in Mesopotamia, gravestones in cemeteries or ancient sites such as Persepolis of ancient Persia. Here, 30 slides project the word NOW on a stone; each for one second, before subsequently projecting the word NOW from another slide for another second. Photographs by Trevor Lloyd &amp; Azin Feizabadi An inverted grave containing soil mixed with other soil gathered from and around the grave of the late German actress Brigitte Mira in Berlin's Luisenfriedhof III.&nbsp;The work is based on time, and throughout the five-week exhibition period, will transform and become a wild garden. Sound is broadcast from the grave. A collage of Brigitte Mira's voices collected from various films in which she embodied a variety of characters and identities. For example: in the film "Everyone Dies Alone" (1976, Dir. Alfred Vohrer), Mira plays the character of Frau Häberle, the mother of an NSDAP opposition activist. There, she plays the role of a strong, experienced and protective woman; a motherly character. In the film "The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser" (1974, Dir. Werner Herzog), she plays Käte, the house keeper of Herr Daumer. Käte is a humble, practical and simple woman, while in the film "Fabian" (1980, Dir. Worlf Gremm) Mira plays the role of the nosy and indifferent Frau Holfeld, who is the Landlord of Fabian. In the Theater-Film "Little Man, What Now?" (1973, Dir. Peter Zadek) Brigitte Mira becomes Mia Pinneberg, a glamorous, funny and extroverted woman from Berlin in the 20s. Other characters from other films include: Queen of England from “Willi And The Windzors” (1996, Dir. Hape Kerkeling), the rich and exotic hotel guest Madame Pillard from “So ein Millionär hat’s schwer” (1958, Dir. Géza von Cziffra), Frau Küsters from “Mother Küsters’ Trip To Heaven” (1975, Dir. Rainer Werner Fassbinder), Emi from “Fear Eats Soul” (1974, Rainer Werner Fassbinder), Mother-in-law from “Fear of Fear” (1975, Rainer Werner Fassbinder), Mechtilde from “Wie einst im Mai” (1961, Dir. Thomas Engel). The sound of Brigitte Mira’s voice as Brigitte Mira can also be heard singing a German version of Leonard Cohen's “Bird in a Wire”. Along with the multiple and contradictory voices of Brigitte Mira, a group of seeds are embedded in the soil whose biologic roots are contradictory. These various seeds don't usually grow together in the same environment or in the same season. The seeds of the plants are chosen based on the characteristics of Brigitte Mira's roles in different films. For example the traditional, snobbish and naive Brigitte Mira as the Queen of England becomes Marigold Tagetes Patula. Brigitte Mira as Käte becomes Tomato and Kohlrabi. Frau Küsters becomes a bunch of Fern; the confide, lovesick and melancholic Emi becomes Nasturium and Brennesel at the same time (two different plants for one character, which are put together to form an analogy for the development of the character Emi throughout the film “Fear Eats Soul”). Some plants are also chosen based on their appearance, such as Fuchsia Boliviana or Albuca Namaquensis, which match the characters Brigitte Mira as Madame Pillard and Mia Pinneberg. Other plants are ecologically defined. How they live, grow and react towards other plants and their environment, such as Gleichenia Japonica (Forked Fern) planted as Brigitte Mira as Mutter Küsters. For some other plants, their culture was of interest: where do they grow and what role do they play in the social live of humans? For example, Nettles: Emi as Brigitte Mira. Berliner Herbstsalon A recent expert evaluation of the events that took place in July 2016 near the Olympia shopping centre in Munich states that 18-year-old David S.’s act was neither an Islamic terror attack nor an apolitical shooting spree, but rather motivated by his right-wing extremist views. This evaluation, however, rarely appears in the public perception mediated by the media. The motives behind the act, which took the lives of nine people, are only described in vague terms. Son of Iranian immigrants, David S. countered the dominant debate on the biographical, psychological and political causes for his actions with his own classification: »I am German«, he shouted to a local resident. The spoken words follow the melody of the classic Version of »Azan« and thus an assimilation process, in which the contents had been adjusted to the form, and the text to the aesthetics. The result resonates five times a day, at the times of Islamic call for prayer; during the exhibition period of 'Berliner Herbstsalon' (8th – 17th Nov. 2013) it was played from the balcony of Palais am Festungsgraben. The harmony or disharmony between the two reference points opens up a wide range of associations which addresses recent debates on constitutional rights, legislation and demands for cultural multiplicity. The installation consists of seven flags with cut-out circles in their centre, it refers to revolutionary moments in post WWII history, i.e. in Hungaria or Romania, when people took certain symbols off the national flags, in a way to symbolize the abandoning of a former regime.
